Mystic Urge to Explore
[ send me this essay ]
An 11 page research paper that discusses exploration, mysticism and religion. In the Age of Exploration, explorers of various nationalities braved the dangers of vast oceans in tiny ships in order to find glory and gold. However, in addition to these worldly concerns, these explorers also felt themselves to be on a religious mission to spread their particular version of Christianity. As this suggests, there has always been a mystical, religious aspect to exploration that connects discovering facts about the unknown with coming closer to universal truths. Examination of some historical examples of exploration and some speculative ones shows that even when mystical ideation is not specifically associated with religion as such, a mystical quality is nevertheless associated with acts of exploration and their possible consequences. However, examination of these sources also shows that the nature of this relationship between exploration and religion changed over the course of the centuries as society changed. It went from a concept of exploration being firmly routed in religious ideology to one that has become progressively more mystical in its orientation. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
