Anne Sexton: Cinderella.
[ send me this essay ]
(5 pp) At a turning point in art history, Marcel Duchamp turned a porcelain urinal, upside down and hung it on the wall, labeling it art, after he signed it 'R. Mutt.' The supposed sophisticated community at large took that to mean - 'whatever I say is art, is art.' The same argument could be made for a poet. If the poet claims it, a poem. Is it then a poem or does it have to follow certain structure, form or meaning to get that title? In this discussion we will examine the poem, Cinderella by Anne Sexton, within two categories, meaning and mechanics of, and see how it stands on its own.

Anne Tyler/Women & Social Isolation
[ send me this essay ]
A 9 page essay that discusses Anne Tyler's novels Celestial Navigation and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. Anne Tyler's novels have been described as "songs written in the key of hardship" (Patrick 24). In many of Tyler's narratives, her female protagonists are isolated, divorced from the company of other women, which denies them the sort of social support that women draw on from each other. In Tyler's novels, also, mothers are seldom resources for daughters. They are frequently out of touch with who their daughters are and are too caught up in their own emotional needs to tend to those of their children. Daughters who are raised by such mothers find that they, likewise, have no emotional resources on which to draw to nourish their own children and the cycle perpetuates itself. Furthermore, the women's emotional isolation prevents them from developing any sort of true intimacy with the men in their lives. These isolated, emotionally-starved women find themselves primarily in their situations due to breakdowns in communication, as well as misplaced assumptions about what is important in life. This pattern of development is particularly clear in Tyler's novels Celestial Navigation and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Article Evaluation of Theories of Jane Eyre and Feminism
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page article evaluation of theories presented in Jane Eyre. The author of the article does a thorough examination of the themes which occur throughout Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Her analysis includes aspects of elements which have been important in feminist studies which are found in the novel; namely, Jane’s desires for intimacy, recognition, sisterhood, and a change in her gender and class. Bronte wrote the novel in autobiographical style which is also considered by the author as one of the major reasons the novel has such appeal in that Bronte can include certain secrets and intimacies of Jane while still allowing the readers to answer Jane’s plea for answers. The author also tries to decipher the relationship which develops between Jane and Rochester that most readers feel does not provide them satisfaction as Jane never completely opens up to Rochester and leaving herself unfulfilled. In addition to the author’s criticism of the text, the author provides extensive criticism and sources from other materials which would prove beneficial in research for other papers on feminism and Jane Eyre. Bibliography lists 1 source.
